Mobile Science Lab (MSL)

Most rural secondary schools in India have grossly inadequate science laboratories. The students often learn science without performing or even observing a single experiment. Vidnyanvahini, through its MSL (Mobile Science Lab), gives the students in secondary schools a chance to learn science by performing experiments, thus giving them not only the pleasure of “learning by doing” but also rendering the subject enjoyable and easy to understand. Vidnyanvahini emphasizes to students that in general, statements should not be accepted as facts just because they are stated in a book. Instead, they should be verified by observations and rational conclusions drawn from such observations. It is through such an attempt that we hope to inculcate and nurture a scientific attitude among the school children.

Typically, members of the Dialogue and Action Group (DAG) of Vidnyanvahini together with the local science teachers interact with about eighty students on a given day. The students watch and perform 20 to 25 short experiments. Supplemental information is provided through audio-visual aids, exhibits such as a model electric train, lecture/demonstrations, powerpoint based presentations using laptop/LCD projector, and classroom discussions.

Vidnyanvahini selects schools based on their need, size, and location. The MSL, in consultation with the school authorities, schedules one or two trips to about eighty-five schools per year. The experiments are chosen primarily for 8th, 9th and 10th grade students. Five to six Teacher Training Workshop are held on a yearly basis. Headmasters of needy schools are encouraged to contact Vidnyanvahini for a visit.

Year-Wise Highlights

2018-19Organized a 5-day residential camp with IISER for 50 students; Trained 6,000 students on the Periodic Table (IYPT); Supported Mumbai Mata Balak Sangopan Kendra in teacher training.
2017-18Expanded to Bihar, visiting 18 schools; Started science centers in Ratnagiri and Islampur with ARAI support; Organized a special camp for differently-abled students with the “Helpers of the Handicapped” NGO.
2016-17Visited tribal schools in Jharkhand and forested areas of Pench (MP); Organized a 6-day camp for students and teachers from Nagaland.
2015-16Celebrated 20 years of Vidnyan Vahini with a panel discussion led by scientist Mohan Apte; Conducted a cultural integration summer camp for students from Arunachal Pradesh.
2013-15Ventured outside Maharashtra for the first time (Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh); Participated in a two-day science exhibition in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
2012-13Replaced the MSL with a new Eicher vehicle donated by Cognizant Foundation; Sold the old vehicle to a sister organization in Hyderabad.
2011-12Produced the film “Kayapalat” to remove rural superstitions; Recognized in the Sir Ratan Tata Trust annual report for tribal school work in Nandurbar.
2010-11Chosen as a designated NGO by Foundation Beyond Belief (USA); Developed PowerPoint-based biology, chemistry, and physics teaching modules.
2009-10Completed the first independent evaluation of MSL effectiveness by University of Pune Management students; Result showed high effectiveness in teaching science and debunking superstitions.
2007-09Acquired the Dhayri Science Center space; Published the book “Anuche Antarang” for teachers; Students began performing 10th-standard chemistry experiments themselves.
2004-07Celebrated 10th Anniversary with the first-ever national gathering of Mobile Educational Units; Featured on Zee Business, Doordarshan (Sahyadri), and E-TV.
2000-03Launched the Surodi watershed development project; Received the Deodhar Puraskar and Bhagini Nivedita Trust awards; Featured on CNN.
1995-99MSL inaugurated on July 14, 1995, by Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar; Visited Baba Amte; First documentary aired on Doordarshan.
